Description
The history of the Jews living in Pécs today dates back to the 1780s, and the founding of the local Jewish community dates back to the 1840s. The organization of the community archive, which had been almost completely forgotten for several decades, provided an excellent opportunity in 2011-2012 to compile a collection of sources that would give the population of Pécs and interested readers a clear picture of the everyday life of the Jewish population of the settlement. In selecting the sources, István Vörös primarily sought to use the documents to highlight the complex fabric of the community's operations. The oldest document published in the volume dates from 1837, and the newest from 1950, but István Vörös focused on the content of the sources rather than on their origin during the selection and categorization. The volume contains characteristic documents that illustrate certain elements of the functioning of the religious community and provide the reader with an opportunity to gain an idea of the coexistence of social groups of Jewish and non-Jewish origin, as well as the joyful and somber moments of the everyday life of Jews. In addition to the minutes of the representative assemblies and the meetings of the presidium, as well as the regulations that have survived to our time, we can glimpse into the associational life of the religious community, the details of the operation of the Jewish elementary school, or the living conditions of the religious community's employees. We can learn interesting information about the operation of the kosher slaughterhouse and soup kitchen, as well as the dietary habits of Jewish families. Of course, the issue of coexistence and exclusion also plays an important role, which is not limited only to the anti-Jewish laws before World War II and the Holocaust, but important details are revealed, among others, regarding the tolerance tax and the Tiszaeszlár blood feud of 1883.
